In 1897, Ambedkar's family moved to Mumbai where Ambedkar became the only untouchable enrolled at Elphinstone High School. In 1906, when he was about 15 years old, his marriage to a nine-year-old girl, Ramabai, was arranged.[

In 1907, he passed his matriculation examination and in the following year he entered Elphinstone College, which was affiliated to the University of Bombay, becoming, according to him, the first from his Mahar caste to do so. When he passed his English fourth standard examinations, the people of his community wanted to celebrate because they considered that he had reached "great heights" which he says was "hardly an occasion compared to the state of education in other communities". A public ceremony was evoked, to celebrate his success, by the community, and it was at this occasion that he was presented with a biography of the Buddha by Dada Keluskar, the author and a family friend. By 1912, he obtained his degree in economics and political science from Bombay University, and prepared to take up employment with the Baroda state government. Postgraduate studies at Columbia University

In 1913, Ambedkar moved to the United States at the age of 22. He had been awarded a Baroda State Scholarship of £11.50 (Sterling) per month for three years under a scheme established by Sayajirao Gaekwad III (Gaekwad of Baroda) that was designed to provide opportunities for postgraduate education at Columbia University in New York City. Soon after arriving there he settled in rooms at Livingston Hall with Naval Bhathena, a Parsi who was to be a lifelong friend. He passed his M.A. exam in June 1915, majoring in Economics, and other subjects of Sociology, History, Philosophy and Anthropology. He presented a thesis, Ancient Indian Commerce. Ambedkar was influenced by John Dewey and his work on democracy.

In 1916 he completed his second thesis, National Dividend of India - A Historic and Analytical Study, for another M.A., and finally he received his PhD in Economics in 1927 for his third thesis, after he left for London. On 9 May, he presented the paper Castes in India: Their Mechanism, Genesis and Development before a seminar conducted by the anthropologist Alexander Goldenweiser.

Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (14 April 1891 – 6 December 1956), also known as Babasaheb Ambedkar, was an Indian jurist, economist, politician and social reformer who inspired the Dalit Buddhist movement and campaigned against social discrimination towards the untouchables (Dalits). He was independent India's first law and justice minister, the major architect of the Constitution of India.

Ambedkar was a prolific student, earning doctorates in economics from both Columbia University and the London School of Economics, and gained a reputation as a scholar for his research in law, economics and political science. In his early career he was an economist, professor, and lawyer. His later life was marked by his political activities; he became involved in campaigning and negotiations for India's independence, publishing journals, advocating political rights and social freedom for Dalits, and contributing significantly to the establishment of the state of India. In 1956 he converted to Buddhism, initiating mass conversions of Dalits.

In 1990, the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, was posthumously conferred upon Ambedkar. Ambedkar's legacy includes numerous memorials and depictions in popular culture.

Ambedkar was born on 14 April 1891 in the town and military cantonment of Mhow in the Central Provinces (now in Madhya Pradesh). He was the 14th and last child of Ramji Maloji Sakpal, an army officer who held the rank of Subedar, and Bhimabai Sakpal, daughter of Laxman Murbadkar. His family was of Marathi background from the town of Ambadawe (Mandangad taluka) in Ratnagiri district of modern-day Maharashtra. Ambedkar was born into a poor low Mahar (dalit) caste, who were treated as untouchables and subjected to socio-economic discrimination.Ambedkar's ancestors had long worked for the army of the British East India Company, and his father served in the British Indian Army at the Mhow cantonment.[8] Although they attended school, Ambedkar and other untouchable children were segregated and given little attention or help by teachers. They were not allowed to sit inside the class. When they needed to drink water, someone from a higher caste had to pour that water from a height as they were not allowed to touch either the water or the vessel that contained it. This task was usually performed for the young Ambedkar by the school peon, and if the peon was not available then he had to go without water; he described the situation later in his writings as "No peon, No Water". He was required to sit on a gunny sack which he had to take home with him.

Ramji Sakpal retired in 1894 and the family moved to Satara two years later. Shortly after their move, Ambedkar's mother died. The children were cared for by their paternal aunt and lived in difficult circumstances. Three sons – Balaram, Anandrao and Bhimrao – and two daughters – Manjula and Tulasa – of the Ambedkars survived them. Of his brothers and sisters, only Ambedkar passed his examinations and went to high school. His original surname was Sakpal but his father registered his name as Ambadawekar in school, meaning he comes from his native village 'Ambadawe' in Ratnagiri district. His Devrukhe Brahmin teacher, Krishna Keshav Ambedkar, changed his surname from 'Ambadawekar' to his own surname 'Ambedkar' in school records.

PM Narendra Modi will address the nation at 10 am tomorrow, the Prime Minister's Office said. The 21-day nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of coronavirus ends tomorrow, 14 April, and it is expected the prime minister is likely to talk about its possible extension."Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation at 10 AM on 14th April 2020," PMO India tweeted.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met 13 chief ministers to take a call on extending the period of lockdown to control the spread of coronavirus. In the meeting on Saturday, the chief ministers of most states had asked for an extension of the lockdown period as cases continue to rise.

Interacting with chief ministers via video conference, the prime minister had said the next 3-4 weeks are critical to determine impact of steps taken till now to curb the coronavirus spread and urged state governments to ensure strict adherence to the lockdown.

Telangana, Maharashtra, Punjab and Odisha, have already extended the lockdown till 30 April.

On March 24, PM Modi has announced a 21-day nation-wide shutdown to mitigate the spread of Covid-19.

Meanwhile, the total number of positive coronavirus cases rose to 9,152 in India, as per the Health Ministry data today.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be addressing the nation at 10am tomorrow, PMO has said. As the country nears the end of the state-mandated 21-day lockdown, rumours have been rife about a possible extension.

While many states including Punjab, Odisha, Telangana and Maharashtra have already extended restrictions till the end of the month, there has been no such diretion from the Cenral government yet.

After a meeting between PM Modi and the chief ministers of various states, the broad consensus was that India may have to stay at home for two more weeks as the country tries to stem a coronavirus outbreak that has claimed over 300 lives and infected more than 9,000 people on last count.

Major metros and state capitals such as Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Indore, Gurgaon, Bhopal, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, and Bengaluru, which have seen a high number of cases, are unlikely to see any major relaxations.

NEW DELHI: PM Modi chaired a review meeting on Wednesday to review the ongoing efforts to contain COVID-19 and will address the nation on Thursday on the efforts to combat it.

Modi is closely monitoring the situation daily and discussed on Wednesday the ways to further strengthen India’s preparedness, including further enhancing testing facilities and actively engaging with individuals, local communities and organizations in chalking our mechanisms to fight the COVID-19 menace.

The next 15 days are crucial in India’s battle against the COVID-19 outbreak and all efforts are being made to contain the spread of the disease during this period and in April, said government officials. The effort is to flatten the curve of infected cases in this period and sustaining the same over April.

Underlining that India was the first to stop incoming travelers from abroad, from March 13, officials said the “positive impact” of this decision should be seen by the end of the month as all positive cases in India so far have been related to people coming from abroad and that it takes one-two weeks for the symptoms to appear.

“It was a major call (on March 11) and some termed it sudden but it came quickly in a few hours after the WHO (World Health Organization) declared coronavirus a global pandemic and our assessment of the cases,” said a senior official, who did not wish to be identified. “The US, with far more cases, announced a ban only on travel from Europe soon after and is now planning to expand it. The bar on incoming travelers was raised thereafter by India and we are ahead of the curve.”

Officials also highlighted that the PM has been in touch with leaders in as well as G20, aiming at both regional and international partnerships to take on the epidemic, amid an early acknowledgement that no country has the expertise to fight COVID-19 alone. While steps are already afoot for a cooperation and creation of a fund following the PM’s video conference with SAARC leaders earlier this week, a similar effort with countries is also on the cards after PM Modi first spoke about it with the Australian PM and then Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince, as Saudi Arabia is the chair of G20.

“These initiatives by the PM are the first from a world leader on COVID-19 and could go a long way in a united fight against the disease by India, US, UK and European Union through the G20 platform,” said an official.
